T840032 Gekko Ogata (his adopted name--he was an orphan with the given name Tai Masanosuke) "Yo Zakura" (Evening Cherry) In the center, the print colorfully illustrates a beautiful courtesan, lightly holding a large black opened Japanese umbrella on her right shoulder, turning and looking at the frog as if she had something to remark. The frog is puffing a large plume of white smoke (envoloping the courtesan), ascending to the sky, and then the snapshot of a daily life in the Heian period (794-1185) is softly depicted. The falling petals of evening cherry blossoms and the graduated coloring of yellow on the background give the creation a transience mood overall. The most important characteristic of Gekko's print is the fine blending of the traditional Japanese aesthetic value and Western impressionistic mode. Depicting beautiful women like the courtesan is one of the conventional themes of ukiyo-e prints. Gekko richly describes her sensitive mood with the amazing use of the colors and the symbolic suggestions of the evening cherry blossoms, the frog, and everyday life in the Heian period. Gekko was born in Tokyo, became an orphan, and was adopted by the Ogata family. Gekko developed an interest in drawing and painting. He did not apprentice in the printmaking schools; he studied on his own the brushwork of Kikuike Yousai, a Japanese-style painter (1788-1878), and developed his own style. His favorite motifs were genre scenes from everyday lives. He often did book illustrations for literary magazines and newspapers, which opened up the new field of woodblock prints. This gave him the reputation as one of the best shin hanga artists. Common to many other artists in the Meiji period, Gekko was also influenced by the Western art styles popular at the time. He regarded himself as a traditional ukiyo-e artist as evidenced, for example, by his historical series of the Tale of Genji prints. "Bijin Hana Kurabe" (Comparison of Beautiful Women and Flowers), for the literary magazine Bungei Kurabu (Literary Art Club, published from January 1894 to December 1912). T830068 Hokusai Katsushika "Kanagawa-oki namimura" (Under the Wave at Kanagawa) Probably the most celebrated of all ukiyo-e prints, Hokusai's "Great Wave" contrasts majestic nature and diminutive humankind. Though Western concepts of perspective are employed, there are many classical overtones harking back to Chinese painting, which deal largely with mountains and water coupled with the small presence of humans. The fleeting beauty of nature and Japan's famous scenic places hae been the subject of Japanese literature, poetry and art for centuries. However, landscape as a theme in ukiyo-e was relatively minor until Hokusai published this series. Many of the works in this series glorify the beauty of the sacred mountain, but in this print Mt. Fuji is reduced to part of the bakground (a generation or two earlier, artists would have had to present Mt. Fuji in the foreground). This is the print that astonished and inspired the Impressionists and Post-Imressionists in Paris at the end of the 19th century. It is said that Clude Debussy used it as his inspiration for the orchestral piece La Mer (1905). "Fugaku sanju-rokkei" (Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fugi) Relief Woodcut/color c. early 1830s Japan I: 9 3/4" x 14 1/2" P: 9 3/4" x 14 1/2" F(m): 17" x 21" Oban 1760-1849

T810502 Kiyomasu I Torii [Kabuki Actor Ichikawa Danjuro I (1660-1704) in the Role of Takenuki Goro] The play, Tsuwamono Soga Gongen, is based on the historical events in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) involving the Soga brothers. They were Soga Gora Tokimune, the youngest, and Soga Juro Sukenari, who in 1193 killed Kudo Saemon Suketsune, who assassinated their father in 1175. In this print, Takenuki Goro is pulling up bamboo, possibly after breaking his plow. The Soga brothers became kabuki heroes in the 18th century, and the plays kown as the "Sogamono" led to the introduction of such acrobatic acting styles as the aragoto that appealed to the popular sentiment of the kabuki audience. Woodcut/color 1697 Japan I: 19 1/8" x 12 5/8" P: 22 5/8" x 13" F(m): 28" x 20 15/16" Oban 1697-1720s active
T2007.9 Kiyomasu I Torii [Ichimura Takenojo IV and Ichimura Tamagashiwa in a Kabuki Love Scene] In this print, Takenojo IV (Ichimura Uzaemon VIII held this name from 1703- 1737) is on the left and Tamagashiwa (1685-1740?), a talented "onnagata" (female role actor) on the right in a contemporary kabuki play. They are identifiable from their names in bold writing on the left and right of the print and the circular actor crests of mandarin orange trees on their sleeves. The actor on the left assumes the role of a hairdreser (played by Takenojo IV) who gently combs the hair of a courtesan (Tamagashiwa). The setting (a courtesan's boudoir) is regularly portrayed in ukiyo-e prints. There is a portable mirror with a cloud design (a mirror is often associated with sexual activity in shunga prints). In the background is a folded futon bed with hexagonal patterns and a tasseled pillow with cloud patterns, suggestive of an adjoining bedroom. Because of the tender activity taking place, we can presume that this is a scene from a "sewamono" play (domestic dramas dealing with contemporary lives of commoners; more realistic in style, scenery and costumes than the historical "jidaimono" plays). These plays were often done in the "wagoto" (gentle) style of acting, which was softer and less actrobatic than the "aragato" (rough) style. Since the typical wagoto hero is a young, soft, romantic and refined dandy, often the heir of a rich family of merchants, and deeply in love with the most beautiful courtesan, we can surmise that the male acting as the hairdresser is actually a rich heir. This is also in accord with the finer details of the male kimono with patterns of shamisen, a three-stinged musical instrument. This is referred to as a mimizu-gaki (worm drawing), due to the fluid calligraphic lines that run throughout the image (evident in the kimonos). This is a Torii-school characteristic. woodblock/color/hand-painted tan-e style 1715-1720 (?) T850072 Kunisada Toyokuni III, Utagawa [Two figures from two facing pages (or folios) of a shunga book] The artist has used the age-old "fukinuki yatai" spatial perspective (roof removed to create a stage in which an action takes place) to increase the sense of voyeurism. The woman's long-sleeved kimono (furisode, dangling sleeves) with crests (apricot blossom?) indicate that she is young and unmarried. In her kneeling position, the layers of her kimono are open at the knees, revealing a glimpse of her anatomy. There is a 13 string Japanese harp (called koto, made popular by the ruling class of the the middle Heian period of 951-1086) and finger plectrums (picks) on the floor. Ability to play musical instruments was part of the training of the geishas, courtesans and highborn daughters. The male gropes her upper body and grasps her wrist. The woman's expression appears to be one of surprise. Shunga (literally "spring pictures") are erotic in content (usually exhibiting exaggerated genitals) and can be individual prints or bound books. Many shunga books include texts. Practically every ukiyo-e artist (notably, Utamaro and Hokusai) designed shunga prints. These erotic images did not have the same stigma attached to them as modern pornography does. In fact, it was tradition that brides of high-ranking officials bought a set of twelve shunga books along with their wedding furniture. The contents of these erotic books and prints range from historical episodes (such as the Tale of Prince Genji) adjusted to contemporary settings, instructional manuals functioning as sexual guidance for the sons and daughters of wealthy families, to comical depictions of erotic acts by those who are not "beautiful". The popularity of the shunga led to a unique development of this genre in Japanese art of the Edo period. This image spread over two pages has been detached from a shunga book.
